Broider/Talbott (Season 3, Episode 10)
PREMISE
In Loudon, New Hampshire, Melody and Rick Broider have 5
boys. Jared (13) Addison (10) Zane (9) McKenzie (9) and Zach (8). The boys have
4 basic rights: food, shelter, education and clothing. Everything else is
a privilege. The family uses a privilege point system, where the kids earn
sticker stars by doing chores. Stars can be used to buy 1:1 time with their
father, and to buy back toys the boys left around. If the boys leave their toys
out, they get their toys taken away. Rick used to burn the toys, but now they
have an auction where the boy with the most stars gets back the toy. Punishment
can include losing your room and having to sleep on the floor. Strict
discipline even extends to the use of the bathroom. When the boys weren't keeping
the bathroom clean, their parents made them sign out a key, and when they are done they check
off that the bathroom was indeed clean. Rick is the vice president of a
software company, and Melody runs a photography business from home. The couple
teach their boys to respect women, and often emphasize respect and leadership.
In the Talbott home in San Antonio Texas, respect and responsibility is the last thing on anyone’s mind. Nancy and Danny have 3 sons,
Darian (13) Joshua (11) and Ethan (9). The boys often play pranks on Nancy, and
Danny is often the ringleader. Although this frustrates Nancy, she puts up with
it because she loves doting on her boys. She does everything for them,
including ironing underwear and socks. The family took the toilet seat off,
because the boys would get pee everywhere. Danny is a plumber, and Nancy is a housewife and the reigning Ms. Latina of Texas. Danny thinks his wife is hot, likes to show
her off and expects her to wear makeup. Nancy's goal is for her boys to eventually marry a stay-at-home mom
who will take care of them like she does.

UPDATE
Jared Broider did an AMA on Reddit. He says his family
decided to go on Wife Swap when his step mother saw an ad on craigslist and
they said “why not?” When asked if the show is scripted, Jared replied “At
first the producers just let things go naturally to get a good example of what
things are naturally like but later on they do almost instagate situations like
if there was an arguement going on that the cameras missed they will have you
recreate it. my family was extremely strict and the image the show gave of was
correct but im not to sure about the other "crazier" family. so
nothing is prewritten but alot of situations are manipulated into existence.”
The show hasn't changed how their family operated. "yes, my mom in the
show is actually my step mom and my father divorced her and after that things
were not strict at all, we pretty much did whatever we want within reason but i
dont think the show changed that haha directly i dont think the show changed
anything lol". Jared doesn't hate his ex-step mom, but believes she was
the reason his father was a hard ass 90% of the time. His step mom said the
other family was crazy and disrespectful. There were some things that didn't
make the cut. "My father used to make us use these stupid point system to
spend time with him so the swapped wife made him spend individual time with
each of us. My dad and i are both musicians and we went downstairs and had a
full length jam session but they didnt show it instead they showed us having a
long in depth convo. i think they were afraid of a copy right infringement or
something. also i went to my school dance and i brought my swapped mom didnt
show any of that. we pulled a prank on our neigbor didnt show that. but they
got everytime the swapped mom cried lol" Jared uploaded the episode to
YouTube, which got deleted due to copyright. In the comments he wrote his dad
didn't actually sleep on the floor, he got up and got back to his bed.
Jared is a musician and plays the electric guitar and heavy metal. Here are videos of him from his YouTube channel playing music.
The New Hampshire Supreme Court website published a
custody case (pdf) between Rick Broider and Jared's mother Christine Broider. The case says
Jared was "caught stealing several items from his school, the family home
and the Manchester mall". Jared has an older brother Nicholas, who was 15
at the time of the show but was not filmed. Rick does MMA and the president of the North
American Herbal Incense Trade, where they make fake weed. He once said his wife
was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, which Melody posted about on Facebook.
"My Crohns is kicking my ass but I'm not about to give it an inch so just
another moment to stop or slow down a bit and reflect and focus on my health."
According to the Concord police log from June 29, 2015, Rick was arrested for domestic violence on May 1st 2015.
Richard Broider, 42,
of Lower Ridge Road in Loudon, was arrested at 5:44 p.m. on May 1, for simple
assault and domestic violence-simple assault. Officers were sent to a domestic
on South Main Street for a man alleging that he was head-butted by his father,
Broider, who reportedly fled the scene. Concord Fire and Rescue teams were sent
to the scene to assist while officers spoke with the victim. The victim alleged
that he, Broider, and his girlfriend were fighting about the victim
"hooking up" with a girl. A 12-hour hold alert was put on Broider
while an emergency domestic violence order was issued in the case. Broider was
later stopped in Loudon and police went there to pick him up.
Rick now works as a holistic wellness educator and even co-founded the non-profit Holistic World Vision. Here is a video of him talking about the six pillars of holistic wellness that helped him live his best life.
In 2016-17, Melody posted on her Facebook that Richard
withdrew from her bank account, I think $1,200 but I'm not certain. She wrote
something along the lines of "the police are coming after you" and "his
son Jared is no better." The post only stayed up temporarily. Melody is into
roller blading, and opened up a skate shop called Spank Alley. Jared has a little
half sister Molly from his mother Christine Spangler. As of 2020, Rick lives in Austin,
Texas. Jared still looks the same as he did when he was 13, don't you think?
Nancy and Jared did reconnect on Facebook. The Talbotts also divorced. Like Rick, Nancy does MMA and workout classes.
Here is a photo of Darian and Nancy uploaded to Facebook in 2013 with the caption "Love my momma".
Here is a photo of Ethan Talbott.
